(dearest Austin) to have missed your call. And I just realized the writing group I lead meets on Friday evening- from 7 until 9… And I have someone coming over before to confer on a book project, and I’m coming back from Mazama to be there for this. Can we meet after 9? 9:30, say? You’ll probably be sleep-deprived and jet-lagged and I don’t know what. Or should we just meet Saturday? Is that possible?

Your voice- I can’t put your voice together with your pictures.

I really look forward to meeting you, Austin. Dear Austin.

And I just hung up from a man who talked to me a lot about aliens. It was weird. Fascinating. Intriguing. Weird. Any thoughts on aliens? How was the party? Would you call again? You asked me to let you know when I could talk- Any time from now on. (I left my phone at home during my poetry group. Sigh. And missed you and my daughter, both.) How is the ordinary business trip going? Did Mr. Albert understand your need to be with your mom?

a friend who loves you,

Oh, Austin

I’m about to go to sleep. I’m really tired from the drive here and from conversations I’ve had today. I’m glad what your mom said made you happy.

I can’t wait to see you. Do you know what time you arrive?

I am really unhappy about my booked up Friday evening. I’m hoping we can meet not too long after that, but I will stop trying to play plan, and let you figure out what works for you. Your arrival will be a kind of surprise party, I think. you never fail to amaze me, Austin.

Do you know you first wrote me a “real” email on May 8, just over 2 weeks ago? And since then? big business and big pools, terrible sickness and miraculous recovery, big hopes and big nerves- big pictures and big question marks- and through it all, much love from your friend, Lyn

I think I can honestly say I have never wanted to meet anyone as much as I want to meet you.

Sweet dreams,
